Rhondda Swimming Club Continue Their Winning Ways

Rhondda Swimming Club’s successful run continued on Saturday night, as they beat off tough competition to win the P and P Cars Shield in a hard fought gala at Pontypool’s Active Living Centre.

As usual the place was packed, and the sound of the excited supporters was deafening, as they witnessed Rhondda take on teams from Cwmbran, Chepstow, Brecon, Barry & Merthyr.

Rhondda’s own Craig Jones said, “Yet another brilliant evening at Pontypool, well done team Rhondda you done us proud. Keep up the great work.  A massive thank you to Gerald Sims and Cwmbran Otters for organising these events, always a brilliant atmosphere.”

New head coach, Jenna Parry said, “Thank you for everyone who came to the gala today. Well done to you all I’m so proud.”

The win comes only a few months after Rhondda lifted the Nat West trophy at the same venue, which has all at Rhondda geared up for a possible Hat-Trick when they return to Pontypool in June to compete for the Hoover Shield.

Rhondda swimmers reaching their peak with competition success

Rhondda swimmers continue their journey to being red hot with great success in three recent galas – achievements that a couple of years back were just a dream. On Saturday 7 October, Rhondda’s A team won the inaugural David Napper Gala, beating four other teams in Rhondda Leisure Centre. Two weeks ago, Rhondda beat five other teams to win the Natwest Shield in Pontypool and the following day came a close second overall in a friendly gala in Barry.

The atmosphere in all the galas was electric, with huge support from the Rhondda friends and families, many of whom had their heads nearly falling off with all the cheering.

Rhondda Head Coach Craig Napper said the club’s swimmers were “awesome” and well deserving of their success. “I would like to thank everyone who made today an amazing gala. My dad would have loved it.. all you swimmers were awesome and the support from all the families was amazing…The future looks good for Rhondda Swimming Club.”

He added that the highlight of the David Napper Gala was to see so many new young swimmers coming through with great gusto and enthusiasm. The club fielded two full teams of swimmers – some swimming in a gala for the first time – and a full team of officials.

The late David Napper was the first coach of Rhondda Swimming Club and was instrumental in setting it up in 1975. He was also manager of Rhondda Leisure Centre for many years.

In the Pontypool gala, Rhondda took the lead in the first race and stayed there, widening its lead and eventually beating the next team by 25 points. It was a similar story in the David Napper Gala, where the win was by 17 points.

Rhondda is performing well with its relay teams, who are regularly winning many of their races. A few years ago, the club was not always even able to put relay teams together for every event.

Rhondda for several years was accustomed to coming last or next but last in galas. Now, the club is drawing the attention of other clubs.

Gerald Sims, Head Coach of Cwmbran Otters, said: “As a coach for over 30 years, I knew David personally and agree he would have loved today’s gala, but he would have been proud of what his son Craig has done for the club. Well done, Rhondda. I have seen the improvement over the last couple of years. All of you are great friends of Cwmbran Otters.”

Swim Camp 2018, Lloret De Mar, Spain

Following the success of the 2015 & 2017 swim camps to France & Spain, Rhondda Swimming Club is currently planning a Swim Camp for 2018.

As the 2017 Swim Camp was well received, we have decided to return to Lloret De Mar, Spain for 2018.

We are now asking swimmers if they would be interested in attending the swim camp so we can gauge the numbers and obtain final quotes. The swim camp will be available to Swimmers in the Squad and JDS and who will be in be in School Year 6 or above at the date of the swim camp.

Proposal: To travel during the October Half Term (Dates to be confirmed pending school term dates)

  • 4/5 day swim camp at Lloret De Mar, Spain
  • Flights to Barcelona
  • Staying in a 4* Hotel on half board basis
  • 2 x 2 hours swim sessions per day in 50m pool
  • Options for day trip to Barcelona (TBC)
  • Bowling Evening

The indicative cost of this trip would be approx. £499 per swimmer, but we are hoping to get this to approx half that price with the help of all our fundraising, e.g. Swimathon, Sponsored walk, bag packing etc. So if you intend to join the club in Spain, you would be expected to take part in our fundraising events, whenever possible.

A deposit will be requested separately in September 2017.

We will be holding a question and answer sessions for parents on the 8th September at Ystrad Sports Centre, details to be confirmed.

So what happened on the last swim camp?

One of our swimmers, Noah Pugh penned the report below following his time at Swim Camp 2017, if you have any doubts about attending Swim Camp, give Noah’s report a read…
